Coral Reefs consist of colonies, of hundreds or thousands of individual coral, that form the reefs. They secrete a hard calcium carbonate skeleton which serves as protection for the colony.
It is the accumulation of the skeletal material which forms coral reefs.
They are most common in warm tropical waters, and are home to hundreds of marine plants and animals, one of the most complex communities of plants and animals in the world.
Rich in life, they offer a great contrast to the relatively barren sea floors of much of the ocean.
Coral reefs are very delicate, the life of the coral and the marine animals and plants that live there can be destroyed by small changes in the surrounding environment.
They can be found in tropical seas, around islands in the Caribbean, and throughout the world.
Two key factors that influence the ability for corals to exist and build coral reefs are temperature and light.
Other factors that affect them, include salinity, waves, nutrient levels and sedimentation.
Coral reefs are home to more than one quarter of all the known marine fish species.
They also provide a home for lobsters, crab, shrimp, clam, starfish, sea worms, sea urchins and marine plants.
The immense biodiversity of coral reefs have led scientists to name them ‘the rain forest of the sea’.
The Coral Reefs around St John are important to the fishing industry, and tourism.
They also provide protection for coastlines against erosion and provide sand for beaches.
