Beaches Overview:

On my cruise in March, one of our stops is St. Thomas, we have been there a couple of times and are thinking of taking the ferry over to St John, thoughts on what to do, beaches to go to.

If you're taking the ferry instead of an excursion, Salomon Bay and Honeymoon Bay are walkable along the Lind Point Trail (not the road!!). You can also get a taxi to Caneel Bay Resort and walk on a flat golf cart trail to those beaches. Caneel has a good lunch buffet for ~$27pp.

Taxis to North Shore beaches are easy to get at the ferry dock. Getting a taxi back is easiest from Caneel, Cinnamon and Trunk.

Cheers, RickG

Listen to Rick! He knows what he's talking about!

My favorites, closer to town, are Salomon and Hawksnest. I think you'd need a taxi to Hawksnest, however. How much time will you have?

If you're into hanging out on the beach with (probably) your friends from the cruise, go to Trunk.

I doubt you'll be disappointed regardless of your choice of beaches.

Why not check out some local food while you're there? In my limited understanding, Shela's Pot is delicious, and Uncle Joe's bbq is my favorite.

Here's another idea- how about just going to STJ next time, altogether?!(Sorry, I was just exorcising my jealousy!) Safe travels, and always, Smiles-

MJ

Hi. That is exactly how we became to LOVE Beautiful St.John. From vacationing on cruise's, we took a cab from STT to Red Hook to catch a ferry over & then took a taxi to Gorgeous Trunk Bay.

Upon our return, we toured lovely & sometimes lively cruz bay & totally fell in Love with what we had seen in a very short time !! needless to say we have now stayed on the island 4 times!

We have been to many islands & STJ is our # 1 FAVE ! We have been on 5 cruises( but not in a long time)

HAVING SAID This, we had the same opportunity while cruising visiting St.Marten and took a Ferry over to another Gorgeous island Anguilla (same setup as STT to STJ ) well.......... needless to say we found another fave ! STJ still is & alway's will b our # 1 island with Anguilla at it's neck !

love them both for different reasons & r now alternating our visits between the two & alway's missing the other when not there !! we were on STJ this past may & will b on anguilla this May 2010 back on STJ ! Do take that ferry over ! U will not regret it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

St John beaches are famous for their snorkeling and diving. There are several dive shops on the island that offer excellent dive packages and others that allow you to walk right off the beach and into the water with the tank on your back.

Otherwise, snorkeling is a must! Bring a mask and fins along on your next St. John vacation.

Follow the signs in and around the coral reefs that identify the various sea life, courtesy of the St. John National Park Service.

Residents of the Virgin Islands are extremely modest in their dress, in spite of Carnival costumes, which are a different matter altogether!

When you're in public there, dress as you would to go shopping at home. Locals are greatly offended when you turn up in town wearing a bathing suit, with or without cover up, rather than nice shorts and tops. Dress is casual, and you want to be as cool as possible, but please cover up when in public.

It's good manners to greet everyone you meet with "Good morning, afternoon, or night" before launching into your questions or comments. Failure to do so will be thought rude. The island greeting in the evening is "Good night" when you meet or arrive, not just when you leave.

Tipping is the same as the US or Europe - 15% of your restaurant check, more if service has been exceptional. An extra dollar or two for your taxi driver is fine, more if he/she handles bags or conducts a good island tour.

Being thoughtful and considerate is appreciated anywhere in the world.
