Caneel Bay Reviews “A nice mix of elegance and outdoors”

My sister and I went to Caneel Bay for 4 nights for a quick getaway. I was impressed from the moment they met us at the airport to when they dropped us off 5 days later. Everything was handled impeccably and seamlessly.

We are not usually resort type vacationers, preferring vacation rentals or less extravagant lodging, but Caneel does not feel high end. It just is high end without the fuss and the attitude. Concierge had answers for all of our questions.

After a long day of travel there was a basket of food for us when we finally reached the room. The room was spacious, updated, and had no tv (Yeh!) The towels were big and soft.

All the beaches, 7 in all, were clean and quiet and simple. There are two great little nature walks connecting the beaches on the property that were a lot of fun to explore, far from the 5 star feeling of the rest of the grounds.

This place is well maintained, nicely designed, in harmony with nature, and well managed. Staff seemed happy and well treated, something you can perceive after a couple of days. This is a good sign. This place is worth every dollar. Snob factor non-existent.

“Beautiful Resort and Beaches”

We arrived at the St Thomas Airport, picked up our luggage at baggage claim and headed over to the Caneel Bay check-in area. From there everything was taken care of. The extra cost of taking their ferry instead of the public one was definitely worth it.

Their check-in area is air conditioned, and they offered cookies and bottled water which was nice. We left our luggage and didn’t have to handle it all after that. We taxi’d over to Charlotte Amalie to catch the ferry. We were offered rum punch and took off for St. John.

This was my third trip to St. John, but my first time staying at Caneel Bay. Now I don’t think I would want to stay anywhere else. The easy access to all the gorgeous beaches just can’t be beat.

We visited every beach on the grounds. My favorite for snorkeling was Little Caneel—I saw the most marine life there. But I also enjoyed Caneel and Scott Beach for snorkeling—we saw turtles at each of these beaches.

Turtle Bay was my favorite for sheer beauty. We took the little hike to Honeymoon beach and it was beautiful, but the water was a bit rough that day for snorkeling.

We also visited Hawksnest but there was a lot of debris on the beach and in the water so it wasn’t very inviting. I was traveling with my mom and sisters and we had ocean view rooms 50 and 51. It was nice because they were connected and we had our own little building.

This was a great location for us. Not too far from the restaurants and Caneel Beach, but far enough away that it was very quiet.

We also had a nice ocean view and view of Caneel Beach from the balcony. The room was nicely appointed and the rum and coke was a nice touch.

My only complaint about the room (or the whole resort actually) are the bugs in the room. I knew to expect this being in the middle of nature, but I still didn’t like it. There were ants in the bathroom and one day there was a bug in the ice bucket. I could handle the ants in the bathroom, but a bug in the ice bucket got to me. With that said, this would not keep me from staying at this resort again.

The buffet breakfast was included in our rate and it was delicious everyday. There was a lot of variety and I really enjoyed the made to order section with eggs and waffles.

We had a couple of meals in the beach bar and everything was good. We did not get to have dinner at the Equator because we left the resort each night to go out to dinner in town. Food is expensive at the resort, but it really wasn’t much more than most of the restaurants in town, especially when you add in the taxi fare.

We arranged a private taxi tour of the island through the hotel and it was great. I had been to the island, but my mom and sisters hadn’t. We stopped at lots of scenic overlooks, visited the Annaberg Ruins, and did a little shopping. Our driver/guide was very knowledgeable.

We also took the day trip on the Caneel ferry to Little Dix Bay. While my mom enjoyed a spa treatment at Little Dix Bay (she said it was amazing!), my sisters and I did the trail through the Baths.

It was crowded with cruise ship groups, so that was disappointing. It took a long time to get through the trail, so we didn’t have time to really enjoy the beach and snorkeling there. We then went back to Little Dix Bay and met my mom for lunch, then hung out at the beach at the hotel.

It was a nice trip and I would recommend it. The Baths are really a unique place to visit.
