Caneel Bay is a Rosewood Resort located on the property once owned by Laurance Rockefeller.

The resort is nestled within Virgin Islands National Park. The hotel was one of the early members of Rockefeller's hotel chain, Rockresorts.

Laurance Rockefeller was so impressed by the area's beauty that he arranged to buy up most of the island of St. John.

He then donated most of it to the U.S. government for the creation of the Virgin Islands National Park, our 29th national park.

Caneel Bay, the stamping ground of the rich and famous, has seven beautiful beaches on its 170 acres, and all are open to the public. Caneel Bay Beach is easy to reach from the main entrance of the Caneel Bay resort. A staff member at the gatehouse will provide directions.

Hawksnest Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches near Caneel Bay, but since it's near Cruz Bay, where the ferry docks, it is the most crowded, especially when cruise ship passengers come over from St Thomas. Safari buses and taxis from Cruz Bay will take you along Northshore Road.

The Caneel Beach Terrace is the original, open air dining hall which offers breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets, along with amazing beachfront views.

The Turtle Bay Estate House and the Equator Restaurant, are both built on the ruins of an old sugar mill, and are open for dinner.

Caneel Bay Beach, which is open year round, provides a variety of activities. Visitors can snorkel, scuba dive, windsurf, kayak, or sail. There are also several tennis courts, nested in the shade.

A diversity of marine life can be found in the waters surrounding the resort. Parrotfish, angelfish, damselfish and sea turtles can be seen swimming around the brightly colored coral.

Snorkeling equipment is complementary with a stay at Caneel.Massage therapy is available for those who need help to unwind from stress.

Many national park trails can be accessed from the resort and are great for hiking this Caribbean island.

Caneel Bay, takes its name from old dutch (Caneel means cinnamon).

The Rosewood Caneel Bay Resort is a perfect Zen hideaway, blending undisputed elegance and comfort with a quiet sense of peace, right down to television-free rooms.

With the resort's 7 secluded beaches and 170 acres of lush tropical fauna, the buildings blend into the background and nature takes her rightful place center stage.

The service is personal and the friendly knock at the door that serves as the morning wake-up call is more than a reminder to rise - it invites guests to get up and enjoy the watercolor classes, kayak tours, an underwater session with the "snorkologist," tai chi classes and, of course, the beach.
