Salt River Bay is a living museum on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Salt River Bay “Top Attraction In St. Croix”

I had the opportunity to take a half-day tour of Salt River Bay with Caribbean Adventure Tours. The tour operator is top notch and ecologically conscientious. The tour guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and informative with positive and negative insights.

This tour begins in the marina and weaves through Sugar Bay and elsewhere in the preserve with plenty of scenic vistas and ability to view the mangroves and waterfowl.

The kayaking is not strenuous but takes a little bit of effort that you may not be expecting. The guide provides water and a snack, which hits the spot.

Salt River Bay “Bioluminescence Moonlight Tour is a must see!”

Four of us (2 tourists & 2 locals) and a guide took the Caribbean Adventure Tours Moonlight Tour so that we could experience the Bioluminescence once the sun set.

This is an awesome tour! We started before the sun set at the Salt River Marina. You can have a 1-person or 2-person kayak. You will get wet from the waist down from the water running down your paddle as you are moving through the water. Wear your bathing suit or bring clothes to change into after the tour.

You will see and learn about the Mangroves, egret hatchery, brown pelicans, Spanish skirmish, Cape of Arrows, Salt River, Sugar Bay, Triton Bay, etc. By this time of the tour you have witnessed a beautiful sunset and are heading towards the area to best see the bioluminescence.

Bioluminescence is a primarily marine phenomenon and is best described as fireflies underwater. It really glows and is one of the most amazing things that I’ve seen. Try to go on a dark night when there is a new moon so that the sky is as dark as can be.

Our guide, Adrienne, was very knowledgeable and humorous and kept the 3 hour tour very interesting. Call ahead to make reservations.

“Biolumina what? It was fun.” Salt River Bay

We went b/c I read the review that said it was awesome and my husband had never been kayaking. So we took the evening trip. It was so cool.

It starts off you are still lit up by the sun and you get to learn about the mangroves and the wildlife in Salt/Sugar Bay. Sugar Bay b/c they use to dump molasses here.

Anyway so you paddle here and there and out almost to the ocean and learn about Columbus and the fights between the tribes on the island etc. Paddle some more and watch the sunset it is super cool over the water out in the middle of the water.

Then paddle to the church where the Indian Remains were/are, you get to hear about this also. Then paddle to the Salt Flat and whack jellyfish as you paddle and they glow green for a few seconds.

We went and it was a half moon if you can go on a new moon so no light is about you can see better. The more moonlight the harder to see the glow.

Then paddle back. You do not need to be in shape, just be prepared to get wet. You do not even need shoes. It is $45 a person and we usually do not do touristy stuff but we knew we would not be able to do this on our own and the people that own the Kayaking place in Christensted were even on the trip as they wanted to learn about the history and had never been. So locals join in the fun as well.

Salt River Bay “Moonlight Kayak Trip was WONDERFUL”

We decided to take the moonlight Kayak trip from Caribbean Adventure Tours on January 4, 2008. This is a workout and you will get wet, but VERY worth the trip.

The Biolumenesant water is wonderfully fun and the trip is educational, relaxing and fun all while getting a great workout!
