We rented a kayak at Maho Bay, and rowed across to the island at Whistling Cay. What a wonderful experience! You can snorkel around the entire island (even this grandmother could do it), and take in the beautiful coral formations, abundant tropical fish, including parrot fish, queen angel fish, trunk fish, barracuda, nurse shark, crabs, etc. etc. etc. We saw more variety here than at Waterlemon or Leinster or Haulover. Francis Bay is also right there, with turtles and rays. Fabulous - highly recommend!
“A great kayak, but a bit rough” We rented a two-person, sit-on-top kayak at Cinnamon Bay ($45 for a half day) and rowed out to Whistling Cay. The best (really only) place to beach a ship is in front of the old customs house. You can also tie off to the scuba buoys (red) on the west side of the cay, but commercial vessels have priority. As this is a major passage, strong currents and high seas may be a factor on windy days. We found the water to be a bit turbid on our trip. Seas were choppy, but not scary. The best snorkeling is near the scuba buoys, but this place is really for scuba diving, as the interesting stuff is over 30 feet deep. We capped off the day by paddling counterclockwise around the cay. One last thing: watch out for the huge beggar iguanas near the customs house. They want your lunch and will steal it from you!
“Saw Lobsters” Whistling Cay had nice underwater formations. At 15', saw lobsters there but not elsewhere. Island is larger than other snorkeling areas so more reef. Small, rocky beach. Cinnammon as good but smaller. Waterlemon better but smaller. The fun of this place was taking the sailboat there. Whistling Cay requires a boat to get to but only because of high-speed motorboats crossing through the channel. Can rent the small sailboats (or kayaks) at Maho Bay (we were guests, but I think they're available to the public) and sail there in 20 minutes. It's closer than it sounds.
Bonaire is a great place to snorkel. In fact, almost half of the visitors to the island enjoy snorkeling. Find out why so many people fall in love with this sleepy little Dutch island.
